What are the schools like in Aston Clinton?

For anyone buying or renting in Aston Clinton.

Aston Clinton's schools are a strong reason to move here. Most of the county's graded schools are good or better. The village has its own primary. The secondaries take a bus or a lift. Parents tend to spend more energy on the choice than the results strictly require.

Ofsted has graded 94 schools across Buckinghamshire, and 80 of them are good or outstanding, which is about five in six. That county-wide count includes 19 rated outstanding, 11 rated requires improvement and 3 rated inadequate. It is a healthy picture, though the inspectors were grading the whole of Buckinghamshire, and a family here will only ever use two or three of those schools.

Aston Clinton School is the village's own combined primary, and the Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest primary about a 13-minute walk from a typical home. The school badge still borrows from the Rothschild coat of arms, because the family built the first schools in the village, and that is about as close to the Rothschild money as most pupils will get. Weston Turville Church of England School serves the neighbouring village this page also covers, and Halton Community Combined School is close by to the south. Places at all of them go by Buckinghamshire Council's published admissions rules, so a house round the corner from the gates helps without settling anything, and the families who assume otherwise usually find out in the spring.

Secondary school means a longer journey. The same 2019 modelling put the nearest secondary about 22 minutes away by public transport, 12 by car and 47 on foot, so the walk that took a quarter of an hour at seven becomes a timetable at eleven. The John Colet School and The Kingsbrook School are both in the area, and Tring School is just over the county border in Hertfordshire. Any family eyeing Tring should check how a cross-county application works with both councils well ahead of the deadline, because two sets of paperwork is how a sure thing turns into a waiting list.

Tring Park School for the Performing Arts is also nearby, and a fair number of Aston Clinton children have never seen inside it.

Schools are one of Aston Clinton's real strengths. The primary is on the doorstep, the county's graded schools are mostly good, and the only serious homework for parents is the secondary journey.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
