Ashford Common

Commuter belt, buckled tight and going nowhere·Surrey·South East England

Ashford Common became Surrey in 1965 by paperwork alone, without anyone packing a box, and the post-war semis have carried themselves a little taller ever since. The driveways do most of the talking, often with two cars on them and a bungalow next door making sure they stay put. People come for a London-sized salary without a London postcode, then spend the next decade telling visitors the roar of the main road sounds a bit like the sea.
