Mostly homeowners about halfway through their working lives. Two in three households own their home. A third of people live alone. One household in five is a couple with children. Nobody here is starting out, and nobody's winding down either.
Census 2021 counted 14,506 people across 6,296 households in Addlestone, and it's the source for every population figure on this page. Of those households, 65% owned their home, 19% rented privately and 14% rented from a council or housing association. Renting isn't spread evenly. Bourneside ward has the highest share of private renting and Addlestone North the most social housing, so who lives next door depends a good deal on which side of town you're on.
The median resident is 40, and 30% of people are aged 25 to 44. Retirees don't dominate and nor do young professionals, so the place belongs mostly to people in the middle.
Modelled household income across Addlestone averaged about £65,000 a year before tax in the financial year to March 2023. That's a figure from a few years back and before deductions, and the take-home version is smaller. It's enough to carry a Surrey mortgage, though not comfortably.
The household mix is broad. 33% of households are one person living alone, and 14% are pensioners living alone, who are counted within that 33%. Couples with dependent children make up 20% of households and lone parents 11%. Single people and families live side by side here, and the two often get very different value out of the same two-bedroom flat.
A third of adults, 33%, hold a degree, and 18% have no formal qualifications. Full-time students are 2%, so there's no student calendar to work around, no halls emptying in June, and the town keeps to the school year and the office year. Only 78 people live in communal settings such as care homes, so the other shares describe ordinary private households almost entirely.
Unemployment was 3% at the census, and 84% of residents described their health as good or very good. The Princess Mary Village Homes were set up here in 1871 for destitute children, and the borough workhouse once stood in Addlestone too. The town's residents today are a very ordinary cross-section by comparison: working, healthy and paying off a mortgage.
On who lives here, Addlestone comes out middling: working homeowners around forty, comfortably off without being well-off, and different from one end of town to the other.
