What are the schools like in Addlestone?

For anyone buying or renting in Addlestone.

The schools are good, and the county is a big part of why. More than nine in ten graded Surrey schools are good or better. Two state secondaries are within the town. Most homes are about ten minutes' walk from a primary. The hard part is getting a place.

Ofsted has given a published grade to 159 schools and settings across Surrey, and 147 of them are rated good or better. That is just over nine in ten. Thirty are outstanding, seven require improvement and five are inadequate. Another 194 settings in the county have no published grade yet and appear in none of those counts. Every one of those figures covers Surrey as a whole. Addlestone's own share is a small part of it, so the county total sets the standard you can expect without telling you about any particular classroom.

Places are given out under the council's published admissions rules, so living near a school doesn't guarantee your child a place there. The Department for Transport modelled the trips in 2019. The average walk to the nearest primary was about nine minutes, and the walk to the nearest secondary about 15. Ask the council how far from the gate the last child was offered a place at the school you have in mind, and compare that distance with the house you're looking at. A school can be a short walk away and still turn your child down.

The primaries are old and spread through the town. St Paul's CofE Primary School goes back to 1841, when it was built for girls and infants, and it has since outlived the workhouse that stood nearby. Sayes Court School is on the site of a country house that was rebuilt for a judge in 1823 and later knocked down, and the school and a housing estate now stand there. Ongar Place, Holy Family Catholic and Darley Dene make up the rest, so most families have a choice of primaries within walking distance.

Secondary is where the choice narrows to two. Jubilee High School and Chertsey High School are the state options, with Fullbrook School as another nearby name. A step up from walking-distance primaries to a two-way choice of secondary means the admissions form starts to count for more. Philip Southcote School, a state special school, is named after the eighteenth-century gardener who designed Woburn Park.

At the private end, St George's College moved out from Croydon in 1884 and has stayed at Woburn Park ever since. Families paying fees have one option inside the town. Everyone else is relying on the county's state schools, and in Surrey that's a strong position to be in.

Schools are one of Addlestone's real strengths, and the only thing that should worry parents is where the admissions boundary falls each year.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
