Abbots Langley
Abbots Langley calls itself a village with the conviction of a place that does its proper shopping in Watford. Henry VIII took it off the abbey and flogged it to his military engineer, the first in a long line of people to look at the fields here and see plots. Its prettiest buildings were a dairy farm built for the Ovaltine factory and dressed up as Marie Antoinette's pretend farm at Versailles, and they are now houses, so even the rustic bit was a costume.
