Winkleigh
Winkleigh is a village that once made White Lightning, which is either the finest or the most damning thing a Devon parish has ever put its name to, and the plant got bought and shut before anyone could decide. What is left is a square, a church, two pubs and an airfield that trained Norwegian pilots and now quietly stores two hundred old buses nobody is allowed to look at. Ted Hughes lived nearby, which tells you the sort of landscape this is: beautiful, damp, and faintly ominous if you stare at it too long. People move here for the quiet and then discover that quiet is not a mood, it is a whole way of life with no shop open after six.
