South Molton

A market town that never wanted discovering·Devon·South West England

South Molton has been a market town since a king with a ploughing problem wrote it down in the Domesday Book, and it has never seen much reason to be anything else. The town produced the father of the man who painted the most famous skies in England, then let him leave for London and got on with the livestock. Come on a Thursday and the pannier market tells you everything: this is a place that still measures a good week in sheep rather than footfall. Anyone arriving in search of a coastal Devon they saw on television will find the sea is a solid drive away and nobody here is especially sorry about it.
