Lynton

Beautiful, vertical, and closed by five·Devon·South West England

Lynton is a Victorian resort that got built on the top of a cliff by people who had not thought very hard about the bottom of the cliff, which is why the main engineering achievement here is a water-powered lift for getting back up. Everything in this part of Exmoor is vertical, wet, or both, and the weather arrives off the Bristol Channel with the enthusiasm of something that has been waiting all week. What you get in return is a town where the loudest thing on a Tuesday is a river, and where the nearest supermarket run counts as a day out. People who move here are either running toward the silence or away from something, and after a couple of winters they stop pretending it was the former.
