Minehead

Where the coast path starts and everyone else stops·Somerset·South West England

Minehead is a Victorian seaside town that got a Butlins in 1962 and has been quietly arguing with itself about it ever since. The harbour once ran privateers and pilgrim boats to Spain; now it runs the start of the South West Coast Path, which means a steady summer procession of people in expensive boots setting off for Poole and locals watching them go. The town sits with the Bristol Channel on one side and Exmoor on the other, so nothing much passes through by accident, and the ones who arrive on purpose mostly stay. Whether you find that charming or claustrophobic tends to depend on how you feel about knowing which car belongs to whom.
