Bideford

A working port that outlived its work·Devon·South West England

Bideford spent four centuries being important, first as a tobacco port, then as the place that shipped people to Canada when Devon stopped feeding them, and it has never entirely stopped mentioning it. The Long Bridge still does the heavy work while the town it connects argues about parking on the quay where an omnibus once went into the Torridge with eight people aboard. It burned three women as witches in 1682, near enough the last in England, which tells you the place has form for making its mind up slowly and then all at once. Come for the estuary light, stay because the estuary light is genuinely the thing, and accept that everything east of the water is a different town wearing the same postcode.
