Moretonhampstead

The town the railway thought better of·Devon·South West England

Moretonhampstead sits on the edge of Dartmoor doing an impression of a place that hasn't noticed the last two centuries, which is roughly accurate. It has been a market town since a king granted it a fair, a wool town until the wool went, and a rest stop for people crossing the moor ever since, which is still more or less the business model. The railway arrived, gave it sixty years of thinking it might become somewhere, then left again. What remains is a granite town that is genuinely lovely and entirely uninterested in whether you approve of it.
