What are the schools like in Wheathampstead?

For anyone buying or renting in Wheathampstead.

Wheathampstead's schools are good, and parents here can relax a little. The primaries get strong results. The secondaries hold up. Most of the county's graded schools are rated good or better. The hard part is getting your child to secondary school, a much longer trip than the walk to primary.

Around Wheathampstead there are 16 mainstream state primary schools, and their pupils average a Key Stage 2 maths score of about 107. Most families will start with the two Wheatfields schools, Wheatfields Infants' and Nursery School and Wheatfields Junior Mixed School, or with St Helen's Church of England Primary School, which takes its name from the village church. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 11 minutes' walk from the average home, or about eight minutes by car. Primary is the stage of school life a child here can reach on foot.

Secondary school means a longer journey. The five mainstream state secondaries in the area have a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 54. Sir John Lawes School and Katherine Warington School are among them, along with St George's School and Roundwood Park School. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 12 minutes away by car, about 20 by public transport and about 39 on foot. A child who walked to primary in 11 minutes spends Year 7 learning the bus timetable.

Across Hertfordshire, Ofsted has rated 203 of the 227 schools it has graded as good or outstanding, close to nine in ten. Forty of them are outstanding, 21 require improvement and three are inadequate. These counts cover the whole county, so they describe the system Wheathampstead belongs to rather than the schools up the road. Settings with no published grade are left out of them.

Living close to a school doesn't secure a place there. Places are allocated under Hertfordshire County Council's published admissions rules, which can weigh distance, siblings and, for the church schools, their own criteria, depending on the school. That matters most for secondary, where the five schools sit some way off and draw from a wide area. Look up how last year's places at the secondary you want were actually allocated, and the distance the last place went to, before you assume the house in front of you is close enough.

The village has a long record of producing teachers. Among its former rectors, Lambert Osbaldeston went on to run a famous London school and another served as private tutor to Queen Victoria. Parents still turn up at open evenings with expectations to match.

Schools are one of Wheathampstead's real strengths. The primaries are close and do well, and the secondaries are good once you allow for the journey to them.
