Is Wheathampstead a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Wheathampstead.

Wheathampstead is a safe place to live, with crime well below the St Albans district average. The crime rate is about a third lower than the district's. Unemployment is close to nil. Overcrowding barely registers. When something does go wrong here, it tends to be minor.

Across Wheathampstead and the surrounding villages, Sandridge included, the police recorded 537 crimes between June 2025 and May 2026. The published rate is about 54 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 34% below the St Albans district average. Twelve months of data means one bad weekend or a run of break-ins on one road doesn't distort the picture much.

The district figure is about 81 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Wheathampstead's 54. The city of St Albans accounts for most of that higher number, and the village sits at the safer end of its own council area.

The streets here are not crowded. The average neighbourhood density is about 2,300 people per square kilometre, unemployment is about 2% and about 3% of households are overcrowded. Those figures describe the kind of area this is. On their own they don't explain the crime rate, but they give an idea of its character. The most menacing gathering in local history is the barons who supposedly mustered here in 1312 against Edward II and turned away the Pope's messengers. Historians aren't even sure that happened.

By type, violence and sexual offences make up about 41% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. That is a broad legal category, and it includes common assault where nobody was hurt. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 22%, against 16% nationally, criminal damage and arson about 9% against 7%, and vehicle crime about 6% against 5%. Each category is a few points above the national share. These are shares of a small total, though, so a single persistent nuisance can move them by several points without the area getting any less safe. The police force's online crime map shows reports for each street, so check the road you're buying on and see where in the area the 537 crimes were reported.

When a crime is reported, how often someone is charged depends on the county force. Hertfordshire Constabulary charged a suspect in about 11% of cases between June 2025 and May 2026, against about 12% nationally, putting it 23rd of 42 forces. About 40% of its cases closed with no suspect identified. That figure covers the whole county and shows what happens after a crime is reported. It doesn't measure how safe Wheathampstead is, which is the job of the crime rate.

Safety is one of Wheathampstead's real strengths. The crime rate is low and none of the crime types stands out, which is what most buyers want to know.
