Upper Edmonton has far more green space and water close at hand than its streets suggest. A patch of green is a couple of minutes from most front doors. Water is barely further. The high street runs on shops and takeaways, with only a handful of pubs. Behind it sits a band of warehouses that does the area's real commercial work.
The nearest green space averages about 130 metres from a home in Upper Edmonton, and the typical address has about 34 green spaces within a kilometre. Most of them are small, but there are a lot of them, and nobody here is far from somewhere to walk the dog. For something larger, Enfield's bigger parks, Grovelands Park among them, are a bus ride away.
Water is close too. The nearest blue space averages about 330 metres from a home, with about 37 water features within a kilometre on average. For a place better known for the North Circular, that is a surprising amount of water within walking distance.
The National Cycle Network is further off, averaging about 1.8 kilometres from a home, and only about 4% of postcodes count as close to it. Anyone planning a weekend ride will cover more of it by bus or on busy roads than on a quiet cycle route.
The rating list shows 213 shops, 19 restaurants and only five pubs in the area. Fore Street, the main shopping street, is where most of them are. Upper Edmonton does its socialising over a counter more often than across a bar.
Enfield as a whole recorded fine-particle pollution of about 8.5 micrograms per cubic metre in 2024. That figure covers the whole borough, and streets closer to the North Circular will differ from it.
Upper Edmonton is a dense, working part of north London. It has Tottenham to the south, Lower Edmonton to the north and North Middlesex University Hospital among its larger neighbours. The housing is mostly terraces and flats, the main road dominates the southern edge, and the parks and water are scattered between the streets.
For private outdoor space, the area has about 27,000 square metres of garden for every 1,000 residents across its neighbourhoods. With half the homes terraces, those gardens are mostly narrow rear strips of the London kind.
The valuation list holds 1,034 business premises in the area. Warehouses are the biggest single group at 254, followed by 212 shops, 129 industrial units and 79 offices. These are rated premises, not a count of businesses currently trading. Upper Edmonton has more buildings for storing goods than for selling them.
Of the area's 223 food premises with a hygiene rating, about 46% hold the top score and about 13% sit at the low end. Checking the rating on the door before ordering is a sensible habit here.
No area of outstanding natural beauty, site of special scientific interest or ancient woodland overlaps Upper Edmonton. Its green space is the everyday kind: parks, playing fields and canal-side paths, with no protected landscape among it.
The surroundings are one of Upper Edmonton's real strengths. Green space and water are within a short walk of almost every home, even if the busy road takes the attention first.
