Is Upper Edmonton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Upper Edmonton.

Upper Edmonton has more crime than the rest of Enfield, and the gap is wide enough to take seriously. The crime rate is about a quarter higher than the borough's. Drug and car crime are well above their usual share. Violence makes up less of the total than it does nationally. It is a busy, crowded patch of north London, and the crime figures look like it.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 6,330 crimes in Upper Edmonton in the twelve months from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate for the area is about 143 crimes per 1,000 people, roughly 27% above the Enfield average over the same year. Those figures cover the whole area. Individual streets will vary more than any average for the area shows.

Enfield's own rate for the same period was about 113 per 1,000. So Upper Edmonton is about 143 and the borough as a whole about 113. That is not a disaster for this part of London, but it is a clear step up from the rest of the borough.

The area is crowded. About 13,400 people live in each square kilometre on average. About 21% of households are overcrowded, and unemployment at the 2021 census was about 5%. More people on fewer streets means more of everything the police get called to, good days and bad ones alike. None of these figures explains the crime by itself.

Violence and sexual offences are the largest category, at about 27% of recorded crime against about 35% nationally. That grouping includes common assault without injury, and here it accounts for a smaller share than it does across England and Wales. Anti-social behaviour is about 20% against 16% nationally, and other theft about 8% against 7%. Two categories stand out. Vehicle crime is about 9% against 5% nationally, and drug offences about 8% against 4%. Drug offences mostly get recorded when officers go looking for them, so a high share partly reflects where the Metropolitan Police chooses to patrol. Criminal damage and arson is the one category that is clearly lower than the national share, at about 5% against 7%. To see what has been reported on the street you are considering, look it up on the police's street-level crime map and read the last few months for that road.

Across London as a whole, the Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of the Met's cases close with no suspect identified. That figure covers the whole force and measures what happens after a crime is reported, not how much crime there is here. In practice, a stolen car is more likely to be closed with a reference number than with a charge.

Upper Edmonton is less safe than the rest of Enfield. The crime is mostly cars, drugs and nuisance, not the violence buyers worry about most, but the overall level is still high.
