What are the schools like in Upper Edmonton?

For anyone buying or renting in Upper Edmonton.

Schools are where Upper Edmonton does best. Every school with an inspection grade in the borough is rated good or better. Primary results around here are solid. There is only one secondary inside the area itself. Parents who chose this patch for the price of a terrace end up with a better choice of schools than they paid for.

The area has six mainstream state primaries, and their pupils average a maths score of about 105 at the end of primary school. Brettenham Primary, Fleecefield Primary and Raynham Primary are among them. The Department for Transport's modelled journey times, from 2019, put the nearest primary about seven minutes' walk from the average front door. Children here can walk to school, which matters in a place where about four in ten households have no car.

Secondary is thinner. The one mainstream state secondary in the area, Lift Aylward, posts a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 40. One school is a small base, so that figure reflects one building's results and should not be read as a verdict on the whole area. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about a 16-minute walk away. Most families will compare Lift Aylward with schools in neighbouring parts of Enfield, and the borough's inspection record below gives them plenty to compare.

Across Enfield as a whole, Ofsted has graded 42 schools and rated all of them good or better: two outstanding, none requiring improvement and none inadequate. A further 37 have no published grade yet, which means they have not been graded, not that they are failing. A borough where the worst published grade is good is unusual. Families who spend their first year here worrying about schools are worrying about the wrong thing.

Places are allocated by Enfield Council under its published admissions rules, so living a few doors from Fleecefield does not secure a place there, and oversubscribed schools fill by the order those rules set. Ask the council's admissions team how far from the gate last year's final offer at your chosen primary went, and check it against the house you are looking at. Parents who skip that step and assume the closest school is theirs usually find out otherwise when offers come out in April.

Schools are the best thing about Upper Edmonton. A family can buy a terrace here and stop worrying about which school their children will get.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
