Thornton Heath is strong at primary and harder work at secondary. Primary results are good. Most of the borough's schools are rated good or better by inspectors. None is rated inadequate. The walk to primary is short, and the trip to secondary is longer. Choosing a school here is easy at five and takes real planning at eleven.
The 11 mainstream state primaries in the area have an average Key Stage 2 maths score of about 106. The local list includes Whitehorse Manor Infant and Junior Schools, Beulah Infants' and Junior Schools, and Kensington Avenue Primary. Three of the schools are the Winterbourne group: a boys' academy, a junior girls' school, and a nursery and infants. That is unusual for a London suburb, since many primary children here are taught in single-sex schools from about the age of seven. The Department for Transport modelled the typical walk to a primary at about six minutes in 2019, which leaves very little time for an argument on the way.
Secondary schooling is thinner. The one mainstream state secondary in the area has a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 46, and a single school is a small base for judging a whole district. Norbury High School for Girls is the named secondary on the local list. For a family with a daughter that is one option. For a family with a son it is a school for his sister. The same 2019 model put the typical walk to a secondary at about 19 minutes, or about 17 by public transport. Children who walked to primary in six minutes discover the 19-minute version in Year 7.
Ofsted has graded 56 settings across the London Borough of Croydon, and 47 of them, well over four in five, are good or outstanding. Ten have the top grade, nine require improvement and none is inadequate. A further 56 Croydon settings have no published grade yet. They are new or have not been inspected, which says nothing about their quality either way.
Places go out under Croydon Council's published admissions rules, and living close to a named school does not secure a seat in it. Check the council's last-allocated distances for the schools you want against the exact house you are looking at. Do it in metres, before the move. In some years the last place offered at a popular school is a matter of a few doors. The parents who learn this from the offer letter are the ones who stop recommending the area to friends.
Schools are one of Thornton Heath's real strengths, with good primaries and a borough where four in five schools are good or better. The weakness is secondary: there is one school in the district, it takes only girls, and every other family has to look further away.
