Is Thornton Heath a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Thornton Heath.

Middling, and slightly worse than Croydon as a whole. Recorded crime runs a bit above the borough rate. Antisocial behaviour and car crime make up the difference. Violence is no bigger a share here than it is nationally. It is a crowded London suburb, and its crime record is about what that would lead you to expect.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 7,283 crimes in Thornton Heath in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate is about 117 per 1,000 residents, roughly 7% above the Croydon average. That is a moderate gap.

Croydon's own rate over the same year was about 110 per 1,000, so the comparison is 117 here against 110 across the borough. Most people judging a London suburb would find the difference hard to spot from the pavement.

Thornton Heath is packed. It averages about 11,600 people per square kilometre, about 5% of residents are unemployed and around 15% of households are overcrowded. These describe how crowded the district is. None of them explains why any crime happens. More people on every street means more neighbours, more parked cars and more chances for things to be reported, and the crime figures here reflect a busy district.

The breakdown is more reassuring than the total suggests. Violence and sexual offences make up about 33% of recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category is the largest almost everywhere, and much of it is common assault without injury. Public order, at about 7%, is level with the national share, and criminal damage and arson (6% against 7%) and other theft (6% against 7%) are slightly below it. The extra comes from two categories. Antisocial behaviour is about 20% of crime here, against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime about 9%, against 5%. The common problems in Thornton Heath are noise, nuisance and cars, more than people getting hurt. To check a particular street, look up the police.uk crime map for the last few months and compare it with the neighbouring roads. Concentrations of reported crime around a few junctions are easy to see there and invisible from the viewing.

The charge rate answers a different question: what happens once a crime is reported. The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it 33rd of 42 forces. In about 53% of its cases, no suspect is identified. Those are force-wide figures covering the whole of London, and they say nothing about Thornton Heath's own streets. What they do say is that if your car gets broken into, the chance of anyone being charged is low.

Thornton Heath is middling on safety, a little rougher than the rest of Croydon and only in the minor categories. Anyone who keeps a car on the road should take the vehicle crime figures seriously. For violence, the district sits close to the national pattern.
