Tetbury's schools are in good shape, and there aren't many of them to choose between. There are three state primaries in and around the town. There is one state secondary. Close to nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. Parents get a short list, and it's a decent one.
The three mainstream state primaries in the area average about 105 in Key Stage 2 maths. St Mary's Church of England Primary School is the one in town. Avening Primary School and Leighterton Primary School serve the villages to the north and west. On the Department for Transport's 2019 modelled times, the average home is about 11 minutes' walk from a primary school. At that size the choice comes down to which of three heads you liked at the open morning, and in a small place like this they will all know each other anyway.
At secondary level the area has a single mainstream state school, Sir William Romney's School, where pupils average about 44 on Attainment 8. It specialises in creative arts. On the same 2019 modelled times it is about a half-hour walk from the average home, or ten minutes by car. Some Tetbury children travel further, to the two grammar schools in Stroud or a comprehensive in Cirencester. Westonbirt School, an independent school for girls aged 11 to 18, is just outside town. Parents who say they aren't bothered about the eleven-plus still tend to know the Stroud bus times by heart.
Across Gloucestershire, Ofsted has graded 136 of 156 settings good or better, close to nine in ten, with nine rated outstanding, 19 requiring improvement and one inadequate. That is the picture across the whole county, so a strong Gloucestershire average can sit alongside a single local school that doesn't match it. Gloucestershire County Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, so buying a house near St Mary's or Sir William Romney's does not secure a place at either. Read the oversubscription criteria for the year your child would start, because they decide places in ways no estate agent's floor plan can. A town with only one state secondary tends to argue about admissions in the queue at the Tesco on the edge of town.
Tetbury's schools are one of its real strengths, with good results, a county inspection record that holds up and very little a parent needs to worry about. The only real limit is choice, and most families here are happy to put up with that.
