Is Tetbury a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Tetbury.

Yes, Tetbury is a safe town, with crime running about an eighth below the rest of the Cotswold district. That works out at roughly 35 crimes a year for every thousand residents. Almost nobody here is out of work. Hardly anyone lives in an overcrowded home. The best-known police building in town is a museum.

Police.uk recorded 306 crimes in Tetbury in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 35 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 13% below the average for the Cotswold district over the same twelve months. At that size a few dozen incidents either way would move the comparison noticeably, so read it as comfortably below the district and leave the precision alone.

For comparison, the Cotswold district as a whole recorded about 40 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same period, against Tetbury's 35. The gap is modest, and it goes in Tetbury's favour.

Across its neighbourhood areas Tetbury averages about 3,400 people per square kilometre, which is compact for a Cotswold town and comes from a centre packed with stone terraces and a ring of post-war estates around it. Unemployment is about 2% and about 1% of households are overcrowded. That describes a working, comfortable town with nobody short of space. Those are descriptions of the neighbourhood and say nothing about what causes crime here or anywhere else.

Violence and sexual offences account for about half of Tetbury's recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That category is a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury, and it is the largest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 20% against 16% nationally, burglary about 6% against 4%, and criminal damage and arson about 6% against 7%. Other theft is about 5% against 7%, and shoplifting about 3% against 8%. All these shares come from a total of 306 crimes, so a handful of incidents can move any of them by several points, and next year's mix could look quite different. Still, a high street of antique shops reporting so little shoplifting suggests that Georgian furniture is hard to slip under a coat. To see where incidents cluster near a particular house, the street-level crime map on police.uk shows recent incidents street by street.

What happens after a crime is reported is a separate question, and the answer comes from the whole county, not just this town. Gloucestershire Constabulary charged a suspect in about 9% of cases in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, putting it 39th of 42 forces on that measure. About 33% of its cases closed with no suspect identified. The force only reported eight months of outcomes in that period. Neither figure measures how safe Tetbury is. They show what happens across the county once a crime has already been committed.

Tetbury is safer than most of the district around it, and its crime problems are small and ordinary. Most buyers will find the safety question settled quickly here.
