South Brent
South Brent sits on the wrong side of Dartmoor's ticket barrier: close enough to the moor that the weather arrives before the forecast does, close enough to the Devon Expressway that everyone who lives there can tell you exactly how long it takes to get somewhere else. The village lost its railway station in 1964 and has been quietly campaigning for it back ever since, which tells you both how long the memory runs and how quickly things move here. The hill it's named after has the ruins of a chapel and a windmill on top, and a lot of people who moved here for the view have never actually walked up it.
