Is Shaftesbury a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Shaftesbury.

Shaftesbury is broadly safe, and slightly less safe than the county around it. Recorded crime runs a little above the Dorset average. The category mix is unremarkable, apart from burglary. About a third of cases close without anyone being identified. The distance between how safe a town feels and how safe it counts is the entire subject here.

Police recorded 906 crimes in the area in the year to May 2026, which the published series puts at a rate of about 61 per 1,000 residents. That sits roughly 11% above the Dorset average. The rate is calculated on a different population base from the resident headcount, so it is a figure to read as published rather than one to reconstruct with a calculator.

Seeing both numbers together is more useful than being told a direction. Dorset as a whole recorded about 55 crimes per 1,000 residents across the same twelve months, against about 61 here. That is a genuine gap and a modest one, the kind that shows up in a table long before it shows up on a walk home.

The texture behind the figures is ordinary enough. The built-up parts run at about 3,300 people per square kilometre, unemployment sits at about 2%, and about 2% of households count as overcrowded. None of those produces crime on its own, but together they describe the sort of place generating these numbers: compact, working, and not under obvious housing strain.

The mix is where most safety questions actually get answered. Violence and sexual offences make up about 35% of records, which is effectively identical to the national share and covers a broad statutory range including common assault where nobody is hurt. Anti-social behaviour comes in at about 19% against about 16% nationally, criminal damage and arson at about 8% against about 7%, and shoplifting at about 8% against about 8%, so none of those three is doing anything worth a paragraph. Burglary is the one that stands apart, at about 7% of records against about 4% across England and Wales.

What happens after a report is decided force-wide rather than street by street. Dorset Police charged or summonsed a suspect in about 14% of cases against about 12% nationally over the twelve months to May 2026, ranking the force 12th of the 42 in England and Wales. The figure that answers the question people actually ask is the other one: about 35% of cases close with no suspect identified at all. That says nothing about how safe the area is, only about what follows a report, and treating the two as one number is how households end up reassured or alarmed by the wrong thing.

Safety here lands in the middle of the range. The town is not dangerous, it is simply a bit busier than the county surrounding it, and the single category running hot is the one people moving to the countryside tend to assume they have left behind.
