Ramsgate's schools are better than the town's reputation, and it isn't close. Nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. Only a handful are rated inadequate. Two grammar schools sit on the local list, and teenagers from other towns travel in to get to them. The headlines are about Saturday nights; the classrooms never got the memo.
Ramsgate's schools are inspected as part of Kent, so the Ofsted counts cover the whole local authority rather than the town alone. Across Kent, Ofsted has graded 221 of 245 schools with a published overall grade as good or outstanding, which is roughly nine in ten. Of those, 38 are outstanding. At the other end, 21 require improvement and three are inadequate. Another 255 settings hold no published grade yet and are left out of that count entirely, which is the right way to treat them: not yet graded isn't the same as bad, whatever the parents' group chat decides by Thursday.
A name on a list isn't a place in a classroom. Admission follows the council's rules and each school's own criteria, and none of the schools named here comes with a guaranteed seat for anyone who buys a house nearby. Buyers who pay extra for a postcode because of the school at the end of the road sometimes find out in spring that the road was longer than they thought. Check the admissions rules for the specific school and the specific year before the offer, not after completion.
At primary level, Dame Janet Primary Academy on Newington Road carries the name of Janet Stancomb-Wills, elected in 1923 as Ramsgate's first woman mayor, which makes it one of the few primaries in England named after a town's political history rather than a saint or a tree. Ramsgate Arts Primary School sits alongside a spread of church, infant and junior schools across the town and out towards St Lawrence and Newington. For secondary, The Royal Harbour Academy is the town's own, named after the thing Ramsgate is proudest of, and St George's Church of England Foundation School takes children at both primary and secondary age. Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School and Dane Court Grammar School give the area two selective options, which is why buses into Ramsgate in the morning carry teenagers from other towns who are doing the commute the adults stopped doing.
Schools are one of Ramsgate's real strengths. Buyers who came for the harbour tend to stay for the admissions letter.
