Is Ramsgate a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Ramsgate.

Ramsgate is safe enough to live in, but it's the busier end of a district that already runs warm. Crime sits above the Thanet average. Violence takes a larger slice than it does nationally. The local force charges suspects more often than most. Nobody moves here for the quiet, and the figures agree.

Police figures for the year from June 2025 to May 2026 put Ramsgate's published crime rate at about 137 crimes per 1,000 people, roughly 15% above the average for the local authority. That rate comes from 6,387 recorded crimes over the same twelve months. A town with a harbour, a high street, a station and a Friday and Saturday market produces more reports than a village on the same population, because more people pass through it than live in it.

The comparison is clearer with both numbers side by side. Thanet as a whole runs at about 119 crimes per 1,000 people, against Ramsgate's 137. That gap is real, but it isn't a cliff edge. It's the difference between a town centre and the district that surrounds it.

The texture of the place explains some of the busyness without excusing it. Ramsgate averages about 7,700 people per square kilometre, which is dense for a seaside town and closer to a city street than a cliff-top village. Unemployment sits at about 3%, and about 4% of households are overcrowded. None of those figures causes crime. They describe a compact, working town where people live close together and the pavements are rarely empty.

The mix of offences looks a lot like everywhere else, with one exception. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, make up about 41% of recorded crime here against about 35% across England and Wales. That is the gap worth knowing about. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 17%, against 16% nationally, so it's roughly the national share. Criminal damage and arson make up about 8% against 7%, shoplifting about 8% against 8%, other theft about 6% against 7%, and drugs about 5% against 4%. Apart from violence, Ramsgate's crime looks like the national average wearing a sea breeze.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how much crime there is. Kent Police charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it sixth of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year to May 2026. That is a figure for the whole force, not for Ramsgate's streets, and it says nothing about how likely you are to be a victim. It does answer the question people ask after the event. The other honest answer is that about 36% of the force's cases close with no suspect identified, which is the number to remember when someone tells you the bike will turn up.

Ramsgate's safety is middling: busier than the district around it, ordinary for a town of its type. Pick the street with care and the town is fine; pick it for the price alone and you'll find out why it was cheaper.
