Is Pangbourne a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Pangbourne.

Yes, Pangbourne is safe, in the way places are safe when nearly everyone owns a hedge. Crime runs about a fifth below the district rate. Unemployment barely registers. Almost nobody lives in an overcrowded home. The police still get called here, only less often than elsewhere in the district.

Police records put Pangbourne's crime rate at about 54 per 1,000 residents in the year to May 2026, roughly 19% below the West Berkshire average. That came to 255 recorded crimes over the twelve months from June 2025. These are published figures, calculated on the statistical areas the police use, so they won't match a sum done on the back of the village population. A quiet place still produces a crime count, and the count sits lower than its neighbours'.

The West Berkshire rate over the same year was about 67 per 1,000, against about 54 for Pangbourne. Neither figure is alarming, and Pangbourne comes in lower. Buyers looking for a place with no crime at all are shopping for somewhere that doesn't exist.

Pangbourne is built at about 1,680 people per square kilometre, which is thin for a place with a railway station. Unemployment is about 3%, and about 1% of households are overcrowded. Those numbers describe the kind of neighbourhood the crime figures come from: settled, spread out and short of the conditions people usually have in mind when they describe an area as "a bit rough". None of them proves anything about why crime is low, and they describe a place with gravel drives rather than a place with bars on the windows.

The mix comes with a warning attached. The totals are small enough that a handful of incidents can move any share by several points, so none of it is a settled picture of the village. Violence and sexual offences made up about 32% of recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That is the largest category almost everywhere, and it covers a wide legal range, including common assault with no injury. Anti-social behaviour was about 19% against 16% nationally, public order about 9% against 7%, criminal damage and arson about 8% against 7%, other theft about 8% against 7%, and shoplifting about 7% against 8%. Every one of those is within a few points of the national figure. Reading a small village's crime mix like a character reference reads too much into a few dozen incidents.

Reporting a crime is a separate matter from how safe the place is. Thames Valley Police charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 37th of 42 forces. About 37% of its cases are closed with no suspect identified. Those figures cover the whole force, not Pangbourne, and they say nothing about how likely anything is to happen here. They answer a different question, and it is usually the one people ask after something has already gone missing from the drive.

Safety is one of Pangbourne's strengths. The crime rate sits comfortably below the district's, and the number to check is the one about what happens after a report, not how often something happens.
