Is North Finchley a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in North Finchley.

North Finchley is safer than the rest of Barnet, by a modest but real margin. Recorded crime is a little below the borough's rate. Violence makes up a smaller share of it than it does nationally. Anti-social behaviour and car crime make up more. The crime that does happen here tends to be the annoying kind, and not usually the frightening kind.

Police.uk recorded 3,686 crimes in North Finchley in the year to May 2026. That's a published rate of about 89 per 1,000 residents, roughly 8% below the Barnet average. The rate comes from statistical areas with their own population base, so it won't match a simple division of crimes by the local headcount. In 1814 a beer house near the main junction was licensed to sell gunpowder and shot. The neighbourhood has been calmer since.

Across Barnet as a whole, the rate over the same twelve months was about 97 crimes per 1,000 residents, against North Finchley's 89. The gap is too small to call North Finchley a different world from the rest of the borough. It does mean that a buyer moving here from elsewhere in Barnet is moving in the safer direction.

North Finchley is a dense place, with about 9,100 people per square kilometre. Unemployment is about 4% and about 9% of households are overcrowded. That makes it a busy, built-up suburb with lots of flats along the main roads and plenty of people coming and going. None of those figures explains the crime rate on its own. Together they describe a place with a lot of pavement and a lot of parked cars.

Anti-social behaviour makes up about 24% of crime in North Finchley, against about 16% across England and Wales. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, make up about 22% here and about 35% nationally, so the category that tops most lists is well below the usual share. Vehicle crime makes up about 13% of crime here, compared with 5% nationally. Burglary is about 5% against 4%. Shoplifting and other theft are close to the national shares, at about 7% each. If you're buying a flat on a main road, ask whether it comes with off-street parking, because the street outside is where most of the trouble here lands. The site of the old Windmill inn on the corner is now a police garage, which at least keeps some of the cars out of reach.

The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% across forces nationally. It's 33rd of 42 forces on that measure. About 53% of the Met's cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures covering all of London, and they say nothing about how safe North Finchley is. They tell you that if a car is broken into here, the report mostly gets you an insurance claim.

North Finchley is a fairly safe part of a fairly safe borough. Most of what goes wrong here happens to cars and to the general peace, and most of the time residents are left alone.
