Newport Pagnell

Milton Keynes with a medieval alibi·Buckinghamshire·South East England

Newport Pagnell was left out of Milton Keynes in 1967 and has spent every year since insisting on the difference, while both kept growing until they met at the M1 and nobody could find the join. It has a medieval church and an iron bridge from 1810 that still takes the lorries, and locals bring them up the way other people mention a famous cousin. The railway shut the same year the new city was drawn up, so the branch line became a cycle path and the commute became a motorway junction. The town won the argument about who it is and lost the one about where it is.
