The schools around Mayland are good, and the village has its own primary within walking distance of most homes. Maylandsea Primary School is the obvious first stop. Primary results in the area are solid. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. The secondary is another matter, because it's a drive away.
Around here there are 4 mainstream state primaries, and their pupils average about 105 on the Key Stage 2 maths test. Maylandsea Primary School is the one carrying the place's name. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 11 minutes away on foot and about 8 by car. Further out the choice widens, to Purleigh Community Primary School and Cold Norton Primary School among others, though each of those means a drive. In Mayland the school run can still be a walk, at least for the first seven years.
Essex County Council's area has 218 schools and settings rated good or better out of 246 that hold a published Ofsted grade, which is close to nine in ten. Across Essex, 22 are rated outstanding, 23 require improvement and 5 are inadequate. Another 238 settings across the county have no published grade yet and are left out of those counts. Five inadequate schools is a small number, and cold comfort to the families whose children attend them.
Secondary school means leaving the peninsula's quiet end. William de Ferrers School is the named secondary, about 20 minutes away by car and about 36 by public transport on the same 2019 modelling. On foot it is nearly two hours. Bus times from 2019 may well have changed since, while the road distance hasn't. Places are allocated under the council's published admissions rules, so living near a school does not secure a place, and the address you buy matters more than how close the building looks on a map. Check which secondary the council has actually offered places to from Mayland addresses in recent years. Teenagers here learn early that the Dengie Peninsula is a lovely place to grow up and a long place to commute out of.
Fee-paying schools are also within reach for those who want them, including New Hall School and Elm Green Preparatory School. They sit outside the state figures above. The county figures cover hundreds of settings that a Mayland child will never set foot in, so they set the general standard and say little about any one school.
Schooling is one of Mayland's real strengths: a village primary on the doorstep and a county where good is the norm. The secondary journey is the one thing that takes some planning.
