Is Mayland, Essex a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Mayland, Essex.

Yes. Mayland is a safe place, and safer than the district around it. Crime runs about a quarter below the Maldon district rate. Unemployment is low. Overcrowding barely registers. Most nights the loudest thing on this part of the Dengie Peninsula is the estuary.

Essex Police recorded 153 crimes in Mayland in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate for the area is about 40 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 23% below the Maldon district average. That rate is calculated on the population of the official statistical areas covering the village, which is why it won't match a sum done on the village's own head count.

For comparison, the Maldon district as a whole runs at about 52 recorded crimes per 1,000 residents over the same twelve months. Maldon district is hardly a trouble spot, and Mayland still comes in a clear step below it.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is settled and comfortable. Averaged across Mayland's small statistical areas, population density is about 3,060 people per square kilometre. About 2% of residents were unemployed at the 2021 Census, and about 2% of households were overcrowded. Those figures describe what the place is like. They don't explain the crime rate, and they shouldn't be read as the reason for it.

The breakdown by type needs handling with care, because 153 crimes is a small base and a few incidents either way moves a share by several points. Violence and sexual offences make up about 62% of Mayland's recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere, and it covers a wide legal range, down to common assault with no injury. Its share here is high mainly because the other categories are small. Criminal damage and arson runs at about 8% against about 7% nationally. Other theft is about 6% here and about 7% nationally, and vehicle crime about 5% in both. Public order offences are about 5% against about 7%. The figure that stands out is anti-social behaviour, at about 6% of Mayland's recorded crime against about 16% nationally. It's the complaint that fills most neighbourhood forums, and here it barely shows up. A year with a few more incidents could reshuffle the whole list, so none of these shares is a fixed feature of the place. The police force's own street-level map for the exact road is the place to check what has been reported nearby.

Once a crime is reported, the outcome is decided across the whole force. Essex Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 28th of 42 forces. About 37% of its cases are closed with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures for the whole of Essex, and they measure what happens after a crime. How likely one is to happen in Mayland is a separate question, and a low crime rate doesn't make the paperwork go any faster.

Safety is one of Mayland's real strengths. On these numbers the village gives a buyer very little to worry about on crime.
