Markyate

Markyate has a St Albans postcode, a Luton dialling code and a council in Hemel Hempstead, and it puts the St Albans one on the envelope. It grew up pouring ale for coach passengers on Watling Street, until a bypass took the traffic round the back and left the High Street with its old inn fronts and the school run. Its most famous local, if the legend holds, held up travellers on that road for a living, which is still more contact with passing trade than the village has had since.
