The schools are one of the best things about Iver Heath. The primaries around here score well above the usual mark in maths. More than four in five schools across the county are rated good or better. The infant and junior schools are within a short walk of most homes. Secondary is where the car gets involved.
Eight state primaries serve the area, and their pupils averaged a maths score of about 107 at the end of Year 6. Iver Heath Infant School and Nursery and Iver Heath Junior School carry the village's name, and Iver Village Infant Academy and The Iver Village Junior School do the same for Iver itself. The Department for Transport modelled the typical walk to a primary school at about 13 minutes in 2019, or about 8 minutes by car. Splitting primary into separate infant and junior schools means parents get to worry about admissions twice.
Buckinghamshire as a whole has 80 of its 94 graded settings rated good or outstanding by Ofsted, which is more than four in five. Of those, 19 are outstanding, while 11 require improvement and 3 are inadequate. Those counts cover the whole county, so they tell you what the local system is like in general and say nothing about any single gate. Parents comparing schools still have to read the individual reports.
Living near a school does not secure a place there, because Buckinghamshire Council allocates places using its published admissions rules, and those rules can change from one year to the next. Buyers who look up how the rules worked out for last year's intake before they exchange contracts know what they are buying. Buyers who judged it from the map find out in the spring.
Secondary is a different trip. The modelled walk to the nearest secondary is about 43 minutes, against about 11 minutes by car and 26 by public transport, all 2019 figures. Secondary schools in the wider surrounding area include Langley Grammar School, St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School and The Langley Academy. At eleven, the walk to school becomes a lift, and the school run moves from the pavement to the passenger seat.
For a family with young children, the schools are one of Iver Heath's real strengths. The hard part comes at eleven, when the walk to school turns into a drive.
