Great Notley

A village that was named before it was built·Essex·East of England

Great Notley was invented in the 1990s, name and all, by slicing the western end off Black Notley and filling it with cul-de-sacs. Black Notley kept the old church and the moat, and the new bit took the word "Great", which is a confident thing to call yourself before the turf has rooted. The A120 keeps Braintree on the far side of the road, close enough for the shops and far enough to put a different name on the estate agent's board.
