What are the schools like in Great Notley?

For anyone buying or renting in Great Notley.

The schools serving Great Notley are good, drawn from a county system where nearly nine in ten graded schools come out good or better. The village has its own primary on the doorstep. The secondary years mean a bus or a lift. Outstanding schools are a small slice of the pool. For a village built almost entirely for families, the school picture holds up its end of the bargain.

Ofsted has graded 246 schools and settings across Essex, and 218 of them were rated good or better, which is close to nine in ten. Of those, 22 were outstanding and 196 good, while 23 were judged to require improvement and five inadequate. A further 238 settings across the county hold no published overall grade yet, and they sit outside those counts entirely. The county figure is the pool Great Notley draws from, and the five inadequate schools are scattered across all of Essex, so a family here is more likely to read about them than to meet one.

Places are handed out under Essex County Council's published admissions rules, so living near a particular school improves the odds without settling the matter, and an oversubscribed year can move the line further than parents expect. Ask the council for the furthest distance offered at your preferred school over the last few intakes, because that number tells you more about your chances than the prospectus does. In a village where about three in ten households are couples with children, the competition for the nearest primary comes from the same cul-de-sacs as you.

Notley Green Primary School carries the village's name and is the one most families here will look at first. White Court School is the other name nearby, and the surrounding villages add Cressing Primary School, Rayne Primary and Nursery School and Stisted Church of England Primary Academy to the list of options within reach. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest primary about a 12-minute walk from the average home, and the nearest secondary about 35 minutes on foot, 29 by public transport or 12 by car. Children who strolled to primary find out at eleven exactly how much of their school life now depends on the A120.

Schools are one of Great Notley's real strengths: the primaries are close, the county's record is strong, and the only real effort a parent faces is the drive once the secondary years arrive.
