Braintree, Essex
Braintree spent six centuries weaving wool and silk for other people, and one of its two railway stations is now named after an outlet shopping village. The Adams family left for Massachusetts and their descendants went on to produce two American presidents, a career move the town has had the good grace never to mention. Most trains carry you as far as Witham and leave you to sort out the rest, so it is a commuter town where you assemble the commute yourself. Even the country park is a dead railway named after a contest where married couples win a side of bacon for proving they never wished themselves single, and that is roughly how north Essex measures contentment.
