What are the schools like in Braintree, Essex?

For anyone buying or renting in Braintree, Essex.

Braintree's schools are strong for a town of its size and price, and parents usually find this the easiest part of the move to get right. Nine in ten schools across the county are graded good or better. The town's primaries finish comfortably clear on maths. Its secondaries are fewer and closer to ordinary. Get the primary right here and the secondary is the remaining question.

There are 18 state primary schools in and around Braintree, and their pupils average a Key Stage 2 maths score of about 104. That figure is a combined average across all 18 schools, and a given classroom can land some way above or below it. The schools range from Bocking Primary School on the old northern side of town to Rayne Primary and Nursery School in the village a couple of miles west. Families can choose from a list long enough to compare and short enough to walk round in a term.

Choice narrows at eleven. Braintree has three state secondaries, and their pupils average an Attainment 8 score of about 44. That score adds up results across eight subjects, so a typical pupil's grades come out in the middle of the range. Alec Hunter Academy, Tabor Academy and Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form are the secondaries on the list, and the last of them keeps its pupils through to eighteen. With three schools, families pick from a shortlist, and the secondary is where Braintree's results level out.

Ofsted has given a good or outstanding grade to 218 of the 246 graded settings across Essex, which is about nine in ten. Of those, 22 are outstanding, 23 require improvement and five are inadequate. Those counts cover the whole county council area, from the coast to the London fringe, so they show the system Braintree's children are in and not any single school here. Another 238 Essex settings have no published grade yet and are left out of those counts.

Essex County Council allocates school places using its published admissions rules, and living near a school does not by itself secure a place there. Check the council's admissions criteria for each school on your list, and how far away the last child offered a place lived in recent years, before choosing a house for its walk to the school gate. Parents in Black Notley who assume Notley High School is theirs because of the name should read those rules first. The village gave the school its name, and the council's admissions rules decide who gets a place.

Schools are one of Braintree's real strengths. The primaries do the heavy work early, the county's inspection record backs them up, and the main thing a family has to plan for here is the move up at eleven.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
