What are the schools like in Godstone?

For anyone buying or renting in Godstone.

The schools are the easy part of moving to Godstone. There are two village primaries. Almost every graded school in the county is rated good or better. Secondary school means a drive or a long bus ride. The problem is distance, not quality.

There are two mainstream state primaries in the area. Godstone Primary and Nursery School serves the village itself. St Stephen's Church of England Primary School sits in South Godstone, the hamlet around the railway station. Together they average 106 in the end-of-primary maths tests. Getting to a primary is easy. The Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the nearest one about 18 minutes' walk away on average, or 9 minutes by car. With two primaries within walking distance, the morning argument is about coats, not parking.

Ofsted's figures cover all of Surrey, not only this corner of it. Of the 159 settings with a published overall grade, 147 are good or better, which is nearly all of them. Thirty are outstanding. Seven require improvement and 5 are inadequate, so a poor school does turn up now and then, but rarely. The county also has plenty of settings still waiting for a first grade. They're simply not graded yet, which says nothing either way about how good they are.

Secondary school is where Godstone's rural setting catches up with you. The same 2019 model puts the nearest secondary about 15 minutes away by car, 31 minutes by public transport, and about 70 minutes on foot. The nearest secondary schools aren't named here, so check the current options with Surrey County Council directly. Parents of eleven-year-olds end up either driving every morning or checking bus timetables.

Living near a school doesn't guarantee a place at it. Admissions follow the council's published criteria, and a house next to a school can still miss out in a heavy year. Before you pay extra for a particular address, check how places were allocated in recent years, how oversubscribed each school was, and any church-attendance criteria for St Stephen's.

Schools are one of Godstone's clear strengths. The primaries are on the doorstep and the county's record is strong. The only real cost is the secondary school run.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
