Is Godstone a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Godstone.

Godstone is less safe than it looks. Its recorded crime rate is well above the rest of Tandridge. Unemployment is low. Overcrowding barely registers. The village green looks calm, but the crime figures don't match it.

Police recorded 1,489 crimes in the Godstone area in the year to May 2026. The published rate for the same period is about 101 per 1,000 residents, roughly 43% above the local-authority average. The police calculate that rate on their own statistical-area population, so it won't match a sum done with the village headcount. Treat the published figure as the one that counts.

For comparison, Tandridge as a whole recorded about 70 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year. So the two numbers are 101 here and 70 across the district. Tandridge sets a low bar, and Godstone clears it with room to spare, in the wrong direction.

None of this looks like a stretched, deprived neighbourhood. Across the area's statistical areas, the average density is about 1,680 people per square kilometre, which is village scale. Unemployment was 3% and overcrowding 3% at the 2021 Census. Those numbers describe a settled, working, adequately housed area. They don't explain the crime rate, and they aren't meant to.

The mix of crime is close to the national pattern, with a slight lean towards disorder. Violence and sexual offences were the largest category at 31% of recorded crime, below the 35% share nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere, and it includes common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour was 18% against 16% nationally, and public order offences 9% against 7%. Criminal damage and arson made up 8% against 7%, other theft 8% against 7%, and shoplifting 8%, level with the national share. Every category is within a few points of the England and Wales figure. Godstone gets more of the same crimes, not a different kind.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how much crime there is, and it's answered at force level. Surrey Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 30th of 42 forces. About 36% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That's a force-wide figure covering the whole of Surrey, not a measure of Godstone's streets. Its honest meaning is that most reported crimes don't end in a charge anywhere in the county.

On safety, Godstone rates poorly. It's no inner-city trouble spot, but the rate is clearly higher than the district around it, and a buyer should read the crime figures before falling for the green.
