What are the schools like in Gidea Park?

For anyone buying or renting in Gidea Park.

Gidea Park's schools are strong, and the borough behind them is stronger. Across Havering, all but one graded school is rated good or better. The state primaries around here get solid maths results. The nearest state secondary is a short walk for most children. Parents here have less to worry about than they probably expect.

There are two mainstream state primaries in the area, and their pupils averaged a scaled score of about 106 in the end-of-primary maths tests. Gidea Park Primary School is the one carrying the suburb's name. Squirrels Heath Primary School carries the name the land south of the station had before the garden suburb was built over it. The Department for Transport's modelling from 2019 put the walk to the nearest primary at about 10 minutes, so most children here can be walked to school.

Around here there is one mainstream state secondary, and its pupils averaged an Attainment 8 score of about 51. That is The Royal Liberty School. Its name comes from the Royal Liberty of Havering-atte-Bower, the medieval charter that let a fifteenth-century Lord Mayor build his house here, which is a lot of history to put on a blazer. The same 2019 modelling put the walk to a secondary at about 13 minutes, only a few minutes further than the primary.

Of the 30 schools Ofsted has graded across Havering, 29 are good or better: 7 outstanding, 22 good, one requiring improvement and none inadequate. Another 42 settings across the borough have no published grade yet and are left out of that count. On those numbers, a family in this borough is far more likely to be stuck with a long walk than with a struggling school.

Living near a school does not get you a place there. Havering Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and the Royal Liberty name on the school sign does not reserve a place for anyone who lives within sight of it. Gidea Park Preparatory School and Nursery and St Mary's Hare Park School are also nearby, for families who want something other than the state primaries. If a particular school matters to you, ask Havering's admissions team how its places were allocated in the last round and how far away the last child admitted lived. Many parents assume the house comes with a place and only find out otherwise when the offer letter arrives.

Schools are one of the best reasons to buy in Gidea Park. Most parents only need to worry about how the admissions rules work.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
