Is Gidea Park a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Gidea Park.

Yes, Gidea Park is a safe area, and it is noticeably calmer than the borough around it. Recorded crime runs well below the Havering rate. Violence makes up a smaller share of offences than it does nationally. Cars get targeted more than people do. Lock the car and you have dealt with most of the risk.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 1,438 crimes in the area over the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 68 per 1,000 residents and roughly 28% below the Havering average. The suburb sits just south-west of a road junction called Gallows Corner, and it still has one of the lower crime rates in the borough.

Havering's own rate over the same year was about 94 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Gidea Park's 68. That is a big enough gap that a few incidents either way would not close it.

Gidea Park is built at about 6,500 residents per square kilometre, which is suburban London density. Unemployment is about 3% and about 4% of households are overcrowded. Most people here are in work and have reasonable room at home.

By category, violence and sexual offences make up about 29% of local crime, against about 35% nationally. That heading covers everything from serious assault down to common assault without injury, and it is the largest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour is about 17% here and 16% nationally. Shoplifting and public order are level with the national shares, and other theft is slightly above at about 8% against 7%. Vehicle crime is the one that stands out, at about 10% of local crime against 5% nationally. Thieves here go after cars more than people. The Metropolitan Police's online crime map shows reports street by street, and it is worth checking how close the clusters come to any house you are looking at.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer comes from the force, not this neighbourhood. In the year to May 2026, the Metropolitan Police charged a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which put it 33rd of 42 forces. Across the force, about 53% of cases were closed without anyone being identified, so the insurance claim usually gets further than the investigation. None of that says how likely you are to be a victim in Gidea Park. It says what to expect from the police if you are.

Gidea Park is one of the safer parts of Havering. The main thing to plan for is someone trying the car door at night.
