Is Clifton, Bedfordshire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Clifton, Bedfordshire.

Clifton is a safe village, with recorded crime a little below the average for the council area around it. It has about sixty crimes a year for every thousand residents. Violence makes up a slightly smaller share of crime here than it does nationally. Cars take far more of it than the national average. The most likely crime in Clifton happens to your car, and you are asleep indoors while it does.

Bedfordshire Police and the national crime figures put Clifton's published rate at about 60 crimes per 1,000 residents in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, from 203 recorded crimes. That is roughly 8% below the Central Bedfordshire average for the same twelve months.

The rate across Central Bedfordshire as a whole was about 65 per 1,000, so Clifton's 60 is lower but not by much. Moving here from elsewhere in the council area will make little difference to your chances, though it will be a small step in the right direction.

The village has about 1,490 people per square kilometre, the unemployment rate is about 2% and about 1% of homes are overcrowded. Those figures describe a well-housed village with people in work and room to live in. They describe the place, and they do not explain its crime rate.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 32% of recorded crime in Clifton, close to the national share of about 35%. That category covers everything from common assault without injury upwards, which is why it leads almost everywhere. Vehicle crime is the real outlier, at about 27% of Clifton's total against about 5% nationally. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 10%, well under the national 16%, and public order about 8% against 7%. Criminal damage and arson make up about 6%, against 7% nationally, and other theft about 5%, against 7%. A village with this few crimes needs only a handful of extra incidents in one category to shift its share by several points, so this mix shows what happened in that year rather than a permanent pattern. Even so, it is a striking year for the cars. Ask the seller where the household's cars are kept overnight, and whether a driveway goes with the house.

Bedfordshire Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 36th of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 38% of its cases are closed with no suspect identified. Those are figures for the whole force, not for Clifton, and they show what happens after a crime is reported, which is a separate question from how much crime there is. A car broken into overnight on a village driveway is exactly the kind of case that usually ends with nobody identified.

Clifton is a reassuringly safe place to live, a little safer than the council area around it, with the cars on its driveways the one thing worth protecting more than usual.
