Caterham

Caterham is two towns sharing one name and a hill neither will concede, with the old church and the old barracks up top and the station and the shops down in the valley. The railway arrived, looked at the Downs, and stopped, so every train starts here and goes to London Bridge whether that suits you or not. The Foot Guards drilled on the hill until the barracks turned into housing, which is roughly the whole town's career: stand to attention for London all week, then go home to a semi with a view. Croydon is a short bus ride north, and Caterham would prefer you mentioned the North Downs first.
