Who lives in Burton End?

For anyone buying or renting in Burton End.

Burton End is home to settled, middle-aged homeowners who are mostly comfortable and mostly in families. About seven in ten own their home. The typical resident is in their early forties. More households are couples with children than people living alone. Burton End looks like a hamlet where people moved to raise a family and have stayed.

The 2021 census, the source for every population figure on this page, counted 2,693 people in 979 households. About 69% of households own their home, about 23% rent privately and about 7% rent from a council or housing association. Ownership is the default here, and the private rented share is large enough that not everyone is staying for good.

The median resident is 41, and about 26% of people are aged 25 to 44. Burton End's typical resident is middle-aged, and about a quarter of residents are in the years when people tend to have young children and a mortgage.

Gross household income, before tax, averaged about £70,500 in the financial year to March 2023, according to an Office for National Statistics model that averages it across the wider area. That is enough for a family house in Uttlesford and two incomes to pay for it. It is not the kind of money that makes the airport noise disappear.

About 28% of households are couples with dependent children, and about 10% are lone parents with children. Together, families with children are the largest single group in Burton End.

About 19% of households are one person living alone, and within that, about 7% are a single pensioner. Single pensioners are only a small share of the population, so Burton End is not a retirement village, and the four-bed houses here are usually full.

About 33% of residents hold a degree-level qualification, about 13% have no formal qualifications and about 1% are full-time students. The mix runs from graduates to people who left school without qualifications, with the bulk somewhere in between. Students make up a tiny share, which is what you would expect in a place where the young adults have mostly gone elsewhere for university or work.

Burton End's population is middling: mostly families, mostly homeowners, comfortable without being wealthy, and settled in without being retired.
