Is Burton End a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Burton End.

Burton End is not a safe area on paper: its recorded crime rate is about four times the district average. Around 1,800 crimes were logged in a year. Theft takes an unusually large share of them. Violence takes a smaller share than it does nationally. A hamlet of farmhouses and lanes carries a crime figure normally seen in much busier places, and a buyer has to work out which of the two to believe.

Police figures for the year from June 2025 to May 2026 record 1,804 crimes in the statistical area that contains Burton End, a published rate of about 257 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 316% above the average for Uttlesford, the surrounding council district.

The Uttlesford average is about 62 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year. Against that, Burton End's 257 is not close. Most of the district carries a crime figure that matches its countryside, and Burton End's figure does not match its own.

Little about the neighbourhood itself suggests a crime problem. There are about 102 people per square kilometre on average, unemployment is about 3% and about 2% of homes are overcrowded. That is the profile of a thinly populated, comfortable rural area. Stansted Airport station is one of the nearest railway stations, and whatever is driving the figure, there is little sign it is coming from the cul-de-sacs. Look up the specific address on the police's street-level crime map to see whether recorded incidents cluster near it or somewhere else.

The mix of offences explains more than the headline does. Violence and sexual offences make up about 21% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere and includes common assault without injury, and Burton End has a smaller share of it than average. Other theft accounts for about 20%, against about 7% nationally, which is the most unusual feature of the local figures. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 16%, the same as nationally. Shoplifting is about 9% against 8%, vehicle crime about 7% against 5%, and criminal damage and arson about 6% against 7%. The area has an unusual amount of property going missing and fewer people getting hurt than average.

Essex Police, which covers the whole county, charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and ranks 28th of 42 forces. About 37% of its cases are closed with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures that describe what Essex Police does after a crime is reported. They say nothing about how often crime happens in Burton End.

On the published figures Burton End is poor for safety. Most of the excess is theft and not violence, but a recorded crime rate this far above the district's will stay attached to the postcode whatever is causing it.
