What are the schools like in Burton End?

For anyone buying or renting in Burton End.

The schools around Burton End are good, and Essex as a whole has a strong record behind them. Primary results are above the usual mark. About nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. The one secondary nearby lands mid-table. A hamlet with no school of its own does well out of the ones next door.

Around Burton End there are two mainstream state primary schools, and their pupils average a Key Stage 2 maths score of about 105. That figure covers both schools together, so it describes the area and not any one classroom. Takeley Primary School and Elsenham Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School are both among the primaries near the hamlet, and both carry the names of their own villages. Burton End has no school named after it, so every school run starts by leaving the hamlet.

There is one mainstream state secondary in the area, and its pupils record an Attainment 8 score of about 47 on the government's measure across eight subjects. That puts the most at stake on a single school, because there is no second local option to compare it with. Forest Hall School and Helena Romanes School are both among the secondaries near Burton End. Check which secondary the council's admissions rules link to the exact address, because with one local school that answer decides the next five years.

Essex County Council's area has 246 schools and settings with a published Ofsted grade, and 218 of them are rated good or better, close to nine in ten. Twenty-two are outstanding, 23 require improvement and five are inadequate. Those counts cover the whole county. A Burton End family will only ever deal with the few schools within driving distance, and the county figure says nothing directly about those.

The council allocates places under its published admissions rules, so buying a house near Takeley or Elsenham does not secure a place at the school there, whatever its name suggests. Several closed schools still turn up in older searches of the area, including one that was in Takeley, and none of them is an option now. Parents who buy within sight of a school gate and treat it as a promise usually find out in April that the council read the map differently.

Schools are one of Burton End's real strengths. The primaries nearby perform well, the county has a strong record, and the only weak point is having a single secondary on which most of the decision depends.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
