Is Broad Blunsdon a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Broad Blunsdon.

Yes, and a little safer than Swindon as a whole. Crime runs below the borough rate. The mix of offences looks much like anywhere else. Shoplifting is the one category that stands out. The standout crime here costs shops their stock, not residents their peace.

Police recorded 832 crimes in the Broad Blunsdon area between June 2025 and May 2026, a published rate of about 80 per 1,000 residents. That's roughly 9% below the Swindon local-authority average. The rate is low enough to sleep on, and not so low that it's worth leaving the back door open.

The Swindon-wide rate over the same year was about 88 per 1,000, so Broad Blunsdon sits a few points under the borough it belongs to. The gap isn't dramatic. Anyone expecting a village postcode to be crime-free has confused a conservation area with a force field.

The area produces those numbers with little of the pressure usually found alongside higher crime. Average population density is about 2,760 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment stood at about 2% at the 2021 Census, and overcrowding at about 1%. Most homes here have more bedrooms than arguments. These are descriptions of the neighbourhood, not explanations for the crime figures.

Violence and sexual offences made up about 36% of recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That's essentially the national share. The category is broad in law and includes common assault without injury, which is why it tops the list almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour was about 16% here and about 16% nationally, level again. Shoplifting is the real outlier, at about 15% against about 8% nationally, so it's a headache for store managers more than for homeowners. Public order offences were about 9% against about 7%, criminal damage and arson about 6% against about 7%, and other theft about 5% against about 7%. Crimes aimed at homes and property run at or below the national shares.

Charging decisions are made force-wide, so this next figure belongs to Wiltshire Police, not to Broad Blunsdon. Over the same year, the force charged a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which put it 32nd of 42 forces. About 34% of its cases closed with no suspect identified. That's the honest answer to "will they catch them", and it's a question about the police, not about the area. In Wiltshire a charge is a little less likely than the national average, and that figure describes the force's paperwork, not your street.

Safety is one of Broad Blunsdon's genuine strengths: crime runs below the borough rate and hardly any of the mix points at people's homes. The shops on the edge carry more of the problem than the cul-de-sacs do.
