Bricket Wood
Bricket Wood was built for a day out and ended up as somewhere people never leave. Two fairgrounds drew London up the railway line by the trainload and then shut in the same year, and the leftover land was turned into bungalows, which is the most Hertfordshire thing that has ever happened to a funfair. The naturists came next and bought plots with no electricity or running water, so for a while the residents wearing the least also had the least plumbing. These days the biggest thrill on offer is the stopping train to Watford, and nobody has campaigned to bring the rides back.
