Is Bricket Wood a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Bricket Wood.

Bricket Wood is a safe village, and clearly safer than the St Albans district around it. Recorded crime runs about a fifth below the district rate. Unemployment is low. Hardly anyone lives in an overcrowded home. The last time the place had a crowd problem, the crowds were stepping off trains for the fairground, and that closed long before almost anyone living here was born.

Police recorded 310 crimes across Bricket Wood in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 64 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 22% below the average for the St Albans local authority area. For a village of a few thousand people, 310 crimes is a modest total.

The St Albans district as a whole recorded about 81 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same period, against Bricket Wood's 64. St Albans is not a rough district to begin with, which makes coming in below it a decent result.

In 2021 the village had about 2,580 people per square kilometre, unemployment of about 2% and about 2% of households in overcrowded homes. That describes a well-off commuter village with plenty of space. It explains nothing about any one burglary, and nobody should read cause and effect into it.

The mix of reported crime shows where the village differs from the national pattern. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 33% of incidents here, against about 16% across England and Wales. Violence and sexual offences come to about 30%, a little below the national 35%, and that category includes common assault without injury. Vehicle crime and burglary each make up about 7%, against national shares of about 5% and 4%. Criminal damage and arson, at about 7%, and public order offences, at about 6%, are close to the national figures. Because the totals are so small, a single bad month or a couple of break-ins on one road can move these shares by several points, so the mix shows how one year went and could look different the next. To see what was reported near a particular house, look up the surrounding streets on the police.uk crime map, which shows incidents by month.

What happens after a report depends on the force. Hertfordshire Constabulary charged a suspect in about 11% of cases over the same twelve months, against about 12% across England and Wales, putting it 23rd of 42 forces. About 40% of its cases were closed without a suspect being identified. Those are force-wide figures covering the whole county and say nothing about how safe Bricket Wood is. Buying a house here will not change Hertfordshire Constabulary's caseload.

Few things about Bricket Wood are as reassuring as its crime record. This is one of the safest places in a district that is already safe.
