Is Berkeley, Gloucestershire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Berkeley, Gloucestershire.

Berkeley is a safe area, with crime running slightly below the rest of its district. The numbers are small. Unemployment is low and crowded homes are rare. The weak spot is what happens after a crime is reported, and that is a county-wide problem, not Berkeley's own.

Police figures put recorded crime in Berkeley at about 43 per 1,000 residents in the year to May 2026, roughly 6% below the Stroud district average. That rate comes from 127 recorded crimes over the twelve months, which is a figure small enough that a single busy weekend can move it.

The Stroud district as a whole ran at about 46 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year, so the gap between the town and its district is three crimes per thousand people. That is close enough to call Berkeley roughly in line with its surroundings, sitting on the better side of the line.

The neighbourhood texture behind those numbers is unremarkable in the best sense. Population density averages about 2,300 people per square kilometre across the town's statistical areas, unemployment is about 2% and about 1% of homes are overcrowded. A town of homeowners on a hill between a castle and a canal does not produce many reasons for a police car to slow down.

By category, violence and sexual offences made up about 44% of Berkeley's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales, and anti-social behaviour about 23% against 16% nationally. That first category is the largest almost everywhere and covers a broad statutory range, down to common assault with no injury. Other theft accounted for about 12% (7% nationally) and vehicle crime about 8% (5% nationally), while criminal damage and arson, at about 5%, and public order, at about 4%, ran below their national shares of 7% each. With only 127 crimes in the year, a handful of incidents shifts any of those shares by several points, so the mix describes one year's run of events and is too thin to call a pattern.

Gloucestershire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts the force 39th of 42 in England and Wales, and about 33% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those figures cover the whole force over the year to May 2026, with eight months of returns reported, and they say how a case is handled once it is reported. They measure the response, while Berkeley's own crime rate is the measure of how often there is anything to respond to, and on that count the town does well.

Berkeley is a safe place to live, comfortably on the right side of an already unremarkable district average.
