Ampthill is mostly homeowners in their forties, with good incomes and family-sized houses. Three in four own their home. The typical resident is in their early forties. About four in ten adults have a degree. Very few are students, very few are out of work, and very few are struggling.
At the 2021 Census, the source for every population figure on this page, about 76% of Ampthill's households owned their home, outright or with a mortgage. About 12% rented privately and 9% from a social landlord. The Crown once owned much of the land around here, and the Honour of Ampthill was sold to the Dukes of Bedford in parts between 1730 and 1881. Now the town is largely owned by the people living in it, in plots of about a semi each.
The typical resident is 43, and about 24% of residents are aged 25 to 44. Ampthill has plenty of working-age people. They tend to arrive with a mortgage and a child already.
The Office for National Statistics models average household income here at about £74,000 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That is a gross figure, and the take-home pay that reaches the bank account is noticeably smaller. Even so, it is enough to explain the semis.
Couples with dependent children make up about 25% of households, and lone parents about 10%. This is a town of families, and a good share of them are still in the school-run years.
About 27% of households are one person living alone, and about 13% of all households are a single pensioner, who are part of that one-person group. Couples whose children have left account for much of the rest. A town where people buy and stay ends up with a lot of parents in houses bought for children who have grown up and moved out.
About 41% of residents aged 16 and over hold a degree-level qualification, about 11% have no qualifications and about 2% are full-time students. With a nearby upper school as the local secondary and no university nearby, students barely register.
At the Census about 88% of residents described their health as good or very good. Central Bedfordshire as a whole does better than England on preventable deaths, and its smoking rate is similar to the national one. Those are council-wide comparisons, so they say nothing about any particular street in Ampthill.
The people who live in Ampthill are one of its real strengths. They are comfortably off, mostly healthy and well qualified, and once they have bought a house here they tend to stay in it.
