What are the schools like in Ampthill?

For anyone buying or renting in Ampthill.

Ampthill's schools are good, and the council area around them is about as dependable as English schooling gets. Nearly nine in ten graded schools are good or better. One is outstanding. A handful need work, and two are inadequate. A child here is more likely to get a decent school than to end up near a struggling one.

Across Central Bedfordshire, Ofsted has given 52 of the 59 schools it has graded a rating of good or better, so close to nine in ten. One is outstanding and 51 are good. Five require improvement and two are inadequate. A further 43 settings have no published grade yet. Those are uninspected rather than failing, and they sit outside the count. Because these figures cover the whole authority, they tell you about the area's schooling in general and nothing about a particular classroom.

The council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and living near a school is one criterion among several, so it does not secure a child a place. Read those rules on the council's website for the specific lower school you want, alongside the most recent allocation round, and do it before you choose a street. Parents in a town this keen on staying put have usually worked out the rules years before the newcomers arrive.

The names on the local register are mostly lower schools: Russell Lower School, The Firs Lower School and Maulden Lower School, with St Mary's VA CofE Lower School among the church options. On the Department for Transport's 2019 modelling, the nearest primary is about a 12-minute walk or an 8-minute drive from the average home. Redborne Upper School and Community College is the secondary on the local list. The modelled walk to the nearest secondary is about 23 minutes, or about 10 by car, and the school's full name takes a fair part of that to say. Those journey times date from 2019, so the bus figure in particular has had time to change.

Schools are one of Ampthill's real strengths. Across the council area, a weak school is the exception and has to be looked for.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
